Often it has been said that the ongoing struggle in Kashmir is for ‘freedom’ or independence that indigenous people want. However, over a decade things have changed in Kashmir as per Indian army. They said that the reason for the struggle in the valley is no longer for freedom or independence but “primacy of Islam”. This has added complexities in dealing with sectarian faultlines in the border state.
Jammu and Kashmir continues to be a challenge and it’s being dealt with; it’s getting a little more complex as slowly the discourse, as indeed the entire thrust, is taking a shift towards primacy of Islam over azaadi. So that clearly adds a fairly complex dynamic to stabilizing the nation as it were,” said deputy chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Subrata Saha. He has served as general officer commanding 15 corps in Srinagar. He shared his opinion at a seminar on ‘leveraging defence expenditure as a tool for nation building’, which was organized by College of Defense Management in Hyderabad. It is worth noting that this is the first time that a senior army official who has worked in the valley has out forth the real reason of the unrest in Kashmir.
Islamic Primacy has plagued Kashmir so much deep that flags of ISIS were waived every now and then whenever any unrest emerges. The violence and stone pelting against security forces and government offices comes from Mosques, who shouts slogans calling for Islamic supremacy. It was of this ideology, Kashmiri Pandits were killed, women were raped, houses were looted and burned. This has forced them to flee from the valley. Any independence struggle for a particular geographical entity is fought by all the inhabitants. And when it comes to independence, Kashmiri Pandits and Hindus of Kashmir were never in favour of it.
